Photofacial Treatment: What Is It, and How Can It Help Me?

Facial chemical peels are some of the most common steps that individuals suffering the effects of aging endure, and from the sound of things, you have to wonder why anyone would want to take a chance on something that sounds so painful. To put it simply, facial chemical peels are performed by applying an acid to the surface of the skin in order to create a controlled wound, which then, theoretically, will heal in a way that is advantageous to the person undergoing the procedure. While the sound of it is enough to turn off many patients, results have ranged anywhere from disastrous to stunningly effective depending on who is performing the procedure. Nevertheless, modern science continues to work in ways that might be considered safer and less off-putting.

Photofacial treatment is one answer to the question of how a person might attain younger looking skin without risking permanent damage or discoloration. The procedure is similar to laser hair removal in that it uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) to attack problem areas such as wrinkles, enlarged pores, or acne. IPL bypasses the epidermis and works under the surface of the skin, at the dermis level, to affect changes over time. What you get with Photofacial treatment is not an immediately effective result, but one that produces quality over time.

But just how much time are we talking about, and what are the costs to you as a patient? First, it helps to know something about the procedure itself. The broadband light, which hits underneath the outer layer of skin, is able to attack a larger area in a shorter amount of time. The Photofacial treatment takes only 30-45 minutes to perform, and you’re safe to apply makeup immediately afterward, which means it’s ideal for people on the go who fit their beauty maintenance into a lunch hour.

Pain factors are much lower with this technique, with redness or increased / decreased pigment as your only concerns and even that can be controlled by minimizing sun exposure. Since the epidermis remains largely unaffected, you may have to get multiple treatments. Four to six are recommended, and they should be performed around three weeks apart. Expect to pay anywhere from $300-$600 for each treatment.

Patients suffering the embarrassing effects of rosacea, acne, or spider veins can benefit from a Photofacial treatment. Glendale physicians in our office perform these routines quite often and are capable of steering you through the maze of advantages, disadvantages, side effects, and benefits. For a Photofacial treatment, Glendale is a good place to start.
